Creating a Marketing Plan: Part 1

Creating a marketing plan that’s doable is tough.

Where do you start?

Time

bb5f5-clock2balarm2bclock

How much time per day/week are you willing to put into marketing? Be realistic. If you only have an hour per week, build your plan around that. A lot can be accomplished in a small amount of time.

If you have more time, keeping a list or schedule can help you use it more efficiently. Using whatever amount of time you have in the most effective way is important.

Money

Dollar Sign

Set a firm budget for your marketing efforts and be realistic about what you can afford.

There are a lot of free marketing options, so don’t feel like you have to have a big budget. If you have a small budget, there are many author friendly marketing options that are as little as $5 and can have a good impact.

Effort

What can you do on your own and what do you need help with? No one can do everything on their own, so admit what your strengths and weaknesses are and go from there. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or help when you need. Authors are great about helping each other.

Now let’s take the next step…

Who is your audience?

Who do you want to target in your marketing efforts? You need to be as specific as possible so you can narrow down your marketing pool. Targeted marketing is more effective than blanket tactics.

What avenues do you most want to pursue?

In-person, online, blogs/reviewers, social media, etc. What are you comfortable with and what types social interactions do you enjoy participating in?

If in-person events aren’t your style, focus on online marketing like Facebook parties, Twitter chats, etc. If you enjoy meeting readers face to face, school talks or bookstore book signings might be where you want to focus.

What is your goal?

Study your competition. What’s working for them? What’s not working? Look especially at creative ways other authors are marketing their books. Finding unique tactics will make your book stand out.

Marketing is tough, but making a plan that fits into your life, budget, and schedule will make it more manageable.

Stress Relief: Author Style

Stress and I don’t really get along. It makes me sick, literally. There’s always a certain amount of stress involved in being an author thanks to reviews, deadlines, decisions, writing the actual book if you ever have time, and dealing with criticism.

blue houseAdd in a rather sudden decision by my husband and I to sell our house so we could buy a new one we really, really wanted to buy. Needless to say, since seeing the house for the first time on January 1st to closing three and a half months later…there’s been a lot of stress involved.

So, how do we combat it?

43b04-moviereelOur go-to family stress relief is heading to the movies. We all love watching movies at the theater, and if there’s nothing good on, we’ll have a movie night at home and pretend all the other craziness doesn’t exist for a few hours.

last of usIf it’s just me and my hubby feeling frazzled, we’ll either play video games (Last of Us has an excellent story!) or have a Netflix marathon.

When it’s just me that’s on the verge of a meltdown…I have a few hidden gems.

GhirardelliDarkChocolate-SeaSaltSoireeAnd I mean hidden, because my kids will eat my treats if I leave them out! Dark chocolate is my absolute favorite, but cupcakes or brownies will do in a pinch as well. Or froyo. Or peanut butter M&Ms.

dr-pepper-10-sodaStress=headaches=exhaustion. Solution? Dr. Pepper 10.

W7fcc5-yoga1hen I get stressed out, it feels like my muscles are all slowly twisting together. Roll out the yoga mats! Deep breathing, stretching, relaxing…definitely a must during stressful times.

way of kingsWhen I really need to unwind and clear my head, I reach for a book. Reading takes me out of the craziness and lets me focus on something else. Sometimes it’s an old favorite, and sometimes it’s a new find. Or both at once! Right now I’m listening to Brandon Sanderson “Way of Kings” on audio book and reading Jana DeLeon’s first book in her Miss Fortune series…again.

So, tell me, what do you do to unwind when things are too stressful?

Things To Remember When at the Library

b98da-boywithbookMy kids love the library, especially recently. I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve been there over the last few months, or how many books we’ve checked out. I have, however, learned a few important lessons!

1. Set a book limit!

Otherwise your kid will check out a billion books, that mix in with your books, and of course your kiddo can’t remember which books they checked out to be able to find them all again.

2. Keep your check out receipt in a safe place!

Our library will email us our receipt, which is awesome, because I lose stuff a lot. When your kid loses all their books in their room, this will be invaluable in hunting them all back down.

3. When it’s time to gather up the library books to return Girl with Book 3them…HIDE THEM!

Or else one of your kids (who shall remain nameless) will grab one out of the stack and take it to school to read during AR time and then forget it at school (of course) on a Friday, which means you can’t return it until Monday.

4. Use the electronic book return!

If your library has an electronic book return, and the receipt gives you a coupon for $5 off your late fees, hoard those babies like they’re made out of gold. With all the books lost in bedrooms, left at school, or just misplaced somewhere else, you’re going to need them!

5. Make friends with your librarians.

Some books are shelved in super weird places, like all the 39 Clues books being shelved by the author (all the books have different authors) so trying to find the next book in the series is like an Easter egg hunt in Yellowstone! Your librarian can save you a lot of time!
